My Pantry is Bare!

When you go primal and give up grains, sugar and processed foods there is not much to put in the pantry.  Seems like all that is in mine is oil, vinegar and coffee. It has become another storage area for my large dishes and Tupperware containers.  It is depressing to look in there and see no food compared to how it used to be.  Maybe I need to rearrange it or something. My fridge, on the other hand, is packed, which is a good thing, but still the empty pantry bugs me.  Why do I let it bother me?  Is it because I'm used to seeing it full and now that it's empty I feel deprived or something? I don't know...

On my trip this past weekend we discovered a wonderful local farmer's market and decided to stop in. I bought: gorgeous red and white onions, cherries, pickling cucumbers and radishes. Had we not been several hours from home I would have liked to have gotten alot more but I knew some of the stuff (lettuce and fresh herbs) would not survive the trip. I washed everything and prepped it for grab-and-go for when I assemble salads for my lunch every morning.  I also bought this Gwen recommended salad dressing holder:

It is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! No more hauling large bottles of dressing or fearing that the lid will come off of my dressing container in transport. (Actually that did happen to me last week and I was left with a big grease spot on my car seat where it leaked through my tote.) I bought the lime green one. I was surprised how soft the bottom is so you can squeeze out every last drop of dressing. I was also wondering if it would be hard to wash. Nope. I squirted a little dish washing liquid inside, swished it around with my finger and it was good as new. Thanks, Gwen, for sharing. It's so fun to discover cozy, new stuff.

Today I am down .4 and I'm going to chug water all day. I feel myself slipping out of the exercise zone and I must get my rump back in gear. That's where the energy lies.

I feel bad that I cannot comment on any of the 3FC blogs that I've been following for so long. It's like losing friends.  If any of you are reading this and have a new blog, please let me know where you are.

This is random and totally unrelated... I've mentioned here a few times that I like to buy cheap thrift store furniture to make over into my cottage-shabby style.  I wanted to share my latest find. I found this little beauty last Friday. The tag said $12.99. I said SOLD. I took it up to pay for it and it turns out it was half-price furniture day so I got it for $6.50! Can you believe it?? I wish I would have taken a before shot but it was dark brown with scratches all over the top and deep scratches on the legs and it was wobbly. I'm not scared. I tighted up the legs, gave it a good sanding with my little mouse sander and she was ready for paint. I love aqua and turquoise and the beachy look so I painted it aqua and then put a whitewash on top and distressed it to match the look I was going for (see, those scratches and dings don't matter that much when you already like the distressed look ;)  Anyway, here she is...

I even lined the drawer with this pretty paper and Mod-Podged it in. It's a little wrinkly in the pic coz the Mod Podge is still wet.

Now you know what I do in my spare time. I used to eat. Now I do this. I like this better ;)

Make it a great day.

  1. I felt the same way when my husband and I attacked our kitchen. We got rid of SO much food, and when we were finished, there was nothing in there. It's like what in the heck are we supposed to eat! I love your new table! I like to refinish things as well but just don't have the space for any more furniture. It's so fun isn't it?!

  2. That table is adorable!!!

Me, I was GLAD to see the pantry start to lessen. We have a very very tight kitchen, and that pantry was always stuffed. I can spread out my spices better now. (although, it still has a lot because Mr. G. is not primal.) (but better than before.)

Yeah, you need to drop kick that negative outlook on it, and CELEBRATE the new storage room you have! :)

    Sucks about 3fatchicks blogs. :(

and glad you like the salad dressing container too! Thanks for the shout-out!

    1. Thanks, Gwen. I think it's worse because my pantry is massive. I will have to rearrange and maybe I won't feel like I'm living in the poor house, lol. Another thing that makes it even worse is that I live alone and I'm only buying food for one person ;)

    2. Still, celebrate the healthy, emptier cabinets! I say it's time to explore Penzey spices, and order up/buy a bunch. You can thank me later! :)

and with that, I think I have my next post topic. LOL

    3. I had a catalog from Penzey's before but never ordered. I will have to request another. You are right about the healthier, empty cabinets, though. ;)

  3. That is an AMAZING find and you did such a good job re-vamping it. It looks super chic and expensive. (definitely worth more than ....$7!)

I love that salad dressing to-go container. Thanks for sharing and have a fantastic week.

  4. I think my wife went through withdrawal when I stopped shopping for bread, chips, cheeses, milk, boxed cereal, and processed foods in boxes and canned goods. She still eats some grains and cheese occasional, but has given up drinking milk. Buying less of the stuff I used to eat daily, freed up more money for organic fresh produce. So I'd say we aren't spending more on groceries since I went Paleo, but I don't believe we are spending any less either, as we still provide non Paleo foods for the grand children that visit regularly. The foods we provide them are from the health food store, just free of ingredients like artificial dyes and high fructose corn syrup.

    1. I definitely went through withdrawal for cereal wondering what I was going to eat in the morning besides eggs every day. I agree, the grocery bill is still about the same - only swapping cans and boxes for fresh stuff now. You are a wonderful example for your grandchildren.

  5. I did exactly the same thing in my walk-in pantry ... Now I have a home for all my large appliances.

    Your table looks beautiful.

Mac, my dh, redid our 70's bedroom set (used in the guest room), painting the pine a dark brown. It is astounding what a change it made.

  6. My pantry is still full as I'm just beginning my journey, but the fridge is FULL. We have more produce than fits in the two crispers. It's all good.

Great job with the makeover. I am totally not talented with that kind of stuff.

  7. If I had the room in our kitchen and pantry, I'd be buying more kitchen stuff - gadgets, appliances, cute dishware, etc. I just love that stuff! And I just love what you did with that little desk!! You're really talented with that, and it's a great hobby. You might have a wonderful extra income too if your house is already filled with great stuff. :)

Hope the rest of the weekend weight drops off quickly now that you're back and getting back to the routine. We just talked at WW about going into vacation with a plan, and making the decision of being okay with maintaining or gaining a bit of weight. You're under 2 pounds - and I bet it's mostly sodium/water weight. You did great! All that walking in the mall helped, LOL!
